Sponsor AYO

Alaska Youth Orchestras is immensely grateful for all of our sponsors! Their support, along with the support of many other generous donors, and funders; has given AYO the necessary backing to make it through the last two years with strength. In order to meet the needs of our community, we’ve learned, changed, adapted, innovated… since the start of the pandemic. While it has been challenging sometimes, we’ve learned things that would have normally taken years to learn.

AYO’s 2022-23 season is the product of that knowledge. We’ve improved our programs and expanded our reach, while staying true to what we know and love – classical music. While last year AYO reached about 100 teens, this year we’re reaching more than 500 youth, spanning from kindergarten to college. To support this expansion, AYO’s staff grew as well, in addition to an Executive Director, Music Director, and Operations Coordinators, our staff also includes a Conducting Fellow, more than 20 contracted coaches/mentors/teachers, and numerous volunteers.

Here’s an update on AYO’s three programs:

  • The Anchorage Youth Symphony is thriving with 70 high school musicians. Additionally, the Youth Symphony has partnered with UAA to provide a large ensemble opportunity for their music majors, adding about 10 college musicians to that number. Leading the program is AYO Music Director Bruce Wood, with support from Conducting Fellow Evan Hagan, 14 sectional coaches, and 10 mentors who teach and play alongside our musicians.
  • Symphony School now has two ensembles with 55 musicians, grade 4-11, rehearsing and performing during two sessions this season: Fall and Spring. Meeting weekly with the support of several AYO coaches, these amazing young musicians will be featured at our Fall and Spring Celebration Concerts. Many of them will go on to audition for the Anchorage Youth Symphony and support other music programs in our community. AYO Conducting Fellow Evan Hagen leads our Symphony School Ensembles with guidance and support from AYO Music Director Bruce Wood.
  • After School Music is a new outreach program that is run in partnership with Camp Fire Alaska. Each week AYO teachers visit 5 after school sites, providing what we like to call “music inspiration.” Through stories, games, instrument demonstrations, and performances, the program’s goal is to introduce children (K-6) to classical music and model the excitement and joy that music education and performance can bring to their lives. With about 400 participants, we believe that After School Music will plant the seeds for future Symphony School and Anchorage Youth Symphony musicians.None of these programs would be possible with the support of our community! We’d like to invite new businesses and past sponsors to support AYO this year. All AYO supporters are listed in our concert programs for the entire season. Distributed at each AYO Celebration Concert, this year’s concert program will reach about twice as many people as in previous years.
  • AYO Fall Celebration Concert: Nov. 29 in the Discovery Theatre
    • Featuring the Anchorage Youth Symphony along with AYO’s Symphony School Ensembles in their debut performance.
  • AYO Winter Celebration Concert: Mar. 5 in the Discovery Theatre
